What is a sparkleball?

According to Wikipedia, it's an ornament handmade out of Christmas lights and plastic cups, using soldering, staples or cable ties to join the cups. It is a modern American folkcraft whose origins are unknown.

This is Gwen's first sparkleball-- and my first time to upload a video. If it doesn't work, I'm sorry! Gwen used a string of steady blue's and a blinking string of multi's.

Click play. The video may be a bit slow to load the first time. On Firefox, double-click the photo.

Tom calls this one Sporeball. He writes, "The basic idea was to take a normal sparkleball and attach, to each cup, another cup, rim to rim, bottom facing outward. I figured that this would add a whole new set of angles for reflection."

Tom soldered small blue cups inside clear tumblers. I LOVE the yellow wire twists on this no-melt sparkleball.

Yee-ha! It's Sparkleball starring in NBC TV drama series Friday Night Lights! (We won't mention that it's hanging in the home of a stripper character.) Thanks to eagle-eyed Tom for spotting this and sharing it.

Crystal Baccus had to buy two colors of cups because that's all Target had left. So she made one layer red, one layer green, alternating.  Voila! Stripes! Here's more on how to find colored cups for your sparkleball.

JoAnn redefined sparkleballery with this one. No lights, just rose petals in the center and a complete rose in the bottom of each cup.
