What is a sparkleball?

According to Wikipedia, it's an ornament handmade out of Christmas lights and plastic cups, using soldering, staples or cable ties to join the cups. It is a modern American folkcraft whose origins are unknown.

I built this solar sparkleball using a string of 25 solar icicle lights (online at Sam's Club.) Best part is no elecrical cord. Just a little solar panel that rests on top or hangs from the sparkleball.

Every year the neighbors on North Yale Avenue turn their block into a sparkle wonderful. It takes 2 days and four commercial boom lifts to hang the 450 sparkleballs. The action starts the day after Thanksgiving, so stop by!
